April 2013 Sophomore Pilgrimage
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) of Missour began the Sophomore Pilgrimage program in 1934. The women on the board of GFWC believed that a greater interest in the obligations and privileges of citizenship could be promoted by enabling students of the 10th grade to see their state government in action. Students in the Sophomore class of high school are selected based on high standards of honor, courage, citizenship, scholarship, leadership and service. These students travel to Jefferson City on the second Tuesday of April each year as guests of GFWC. West County Women’s Club organizes and chaperones public high school students from five metro St. Louis area counties. During the Pilgrimage, the students are given tours of the Capitol building, Executive Mansion and Supreme Court. Lunch is provided with several of the top elected officials of Missouri speaking about the responsibilities of their offices and their personal motivation to choose public service as a career.
May 2013 WCWC Receives Special Award
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ (GFWC) West County Women's Club was presented the "Virginia Oliver Award" for its donation of more than $37,000 to Missouri Girls Town during 2012. The plaque was accepted by club member, Kim Distefano (right), at the GFWC of Missouri Convention held in Columbia, MO, on May 2. Presenting the award was Missouri Girls Town Executive Director, Kathy Becker (left). Missouri Girls Town, located near Kingdom City, MO, is a residential treatment facility that assists girls, ages 8-21, who have been abused or neglected. Its mission is to create a loving, stable environment for the care and treatment of these young women so that each may regain a new start in life. GFWC is over 100,000 members strong and is dedicated to strengthening communities and enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

October 2012 Missouri Girls Town Tour
On Saturday, October 13, nine West County Women’s Club members traveled to Kingdom City, MO, for a tour of Missouri Girls Town and lunch at Cedar Lake Cellars. Kathy Becker, executive director of Missouri Girls Town, greeted us outside the Administration building. We delivered six Welcome Baskets and 18 boxes of personal hygiene products.
Besides the dining hall, counseling/medical, recreation and the school buildings, we were able to see the cottages and chat with the girls. The living quarters were clean with fall decorations festively arranged inside and outside the girls’ homes. The McClain-Williams Residential Treatment Home renovation continues at a swift pace.
Thank you, Tammy Swisher, for planning a perfect day, complete with maps, Welcome Baskets and the personal hygiene products.
